Crete Guide - Rethymno

Die Stadt Rethymno war nur wenige Kilometer von unserem Hotel entfernt und eignete sich perfekt für einen Kurztrip.

Zuerst besuchte wir das Kloster Arkadi. Da wir kein Auto mieten wollten, nahmen wir den Bus, der ganze 45 Minuten bis zum Kloster gebraucht hat. Das Kloster liegt etwas ausserhalb von Rethymno, weit oben auf einem Hügel und ist schwer ohne Navigationssystem zu finden. Es waren viele Besucher dort aber man konnte sich trotzdem in Ruhe alles anschauen und auch Fotos machen. Auch ist innen ein kleines Museum, sodass man noch etwas Geschichte miterleben kann. Im Kloster kann man eine Kerze anzünden und sich die reich beschmückten Innenräume mit griechisch-orthodoxen Ikonen ansehen. Insgesamt sollte man sich 1-2 h Zeit nehmen um sich alles in Ruhe anzusehen. 

Auch wenn es sehr weit von der Innestadt entfernt ist, lohnt sich der Besuch! Das Kloster ist einfach atemberaubend schön.

The town Rethymno was only a few kilometers away from our hotel and was perfect for a day trip.

At first we visited the monastery Arkadi. Since we didn't want to rent a car we chose the bus to Arkadi. Unfortunatelly, the monastery was almost 45 minutes away from the center of Rethymno and is situated in a hill. There were a lot of tourists, but you were able to take pictures and to discover the monastery with calm. There was a little musuem as well you could visit. Inside of the monastery you could light up a candle and enjoy the interior spaces with the greek-orthodox icons.

Although, the monastery is far away from the center of Rethymno, I can warmly recommend a visit. The monastery is just breathtaking beautiful.

Nachmittags nahmen wir den Bus wieder in die Innenstadt von Rethymno und sind auf die Festungsruine der Fortezza von Rethymno. Hier hat man einen tollen Blick auf die Altstadt. Da es auf der Festung kaum schattige Plätze gibt, sollte man unbedingt am späten Nachmittag rauf, da es sonst einfach viel zu heiss und sonnig ist. Die Fortezza ist das Wahrzeichen von Rethymno und deswegen auch ein Muss, wenn man in der Stadt ist.

In the afternoon we took the bus back to the center of Rethymno and visited the fortress Fortezza of Rethymno. Up there you have a wonderful view over the city. You should visit the fortress in the late afternoon since there are no shady places.

Am Ausgang der Fortezza findet man ein kleines, aber feines Restaurant mit dem Namen "Thalassographia". Hier kann man sehr gut kretische Spezialitäten essen, einen Wein trinken und die Aussicht über den venezianischen Hafen genießen. Nach dem langen Tag haben wir uns erstmal ein tolles Essen dort gegönnt. Ich kann euch die Tigergarnelen mit Tagliatelle nur empfehlen! Das Essen wird frisch zubereitet und auch die Preise sind angemessen.

At the exit of the fortress you can find one of the best restaurants in Rethymno calles "Thalassographia". Here you can eat Cretan specialities, drink wine and enjoy the view over the Venetian port. We took there a rest and ate different Cretan food. The food is prepared fresh and the prices are appropriate.

Nach dem Essen sind wir Abends in die Altstadt. Rethymno ist eine Studentenstadt, deswegen ist Abends immer etwas los. Die Straßen sind voll mit freundlichen Menschen, verschiedene Souvenir- und Modegeschäfte sind bis spät in die Nacht offen und überall ist Musik zu hören. Hier kann man wirklich das griechische Nachtleben erleben. Die Stadt ist sehr eng gebaut, ein Haus steht nach dem anderen und überall gibt es etwas zu entdecken.

At the evening we went to the historic center of the city. Since Rethymno is a student city, you can always find people there. The streets are full with friendly people, different shops are opened and music is just everywhere! Here you can definitelly enjoy the greek night life.

Insgesamt hat uns Rethymno so sehr gefallen, sodass wir kurz vor unserem Abflug noch einmal die Altstadt besucht haben. Auch sind die Straßen dort sauber und sicher. Wir konnten uns kaum entscheiden in welche Bar wir gehen sollten, da uns einfach alle angesprochen haben. Trotzdem empfehle ich euch ein Hotelzimmer etwas ausserhalb von Rethymno zu nehmen, da es sonst Abends etwas zu laut werden könnte.

Die Busverbindungen sind ausserdem sehr gut. Wir haben sehr viele deutsche Urlauber getroffen, die auch mit dem Bus unterwegs und zufrieden waren. Die Busse fahren meist bis 24 Uhr regelmäßig und Taxifahrten sind auch nicht zu teuer wenn es zu spät werden sollte.

Altogether, we really enjoyed this city so much, that we went a second time there. The streets are clean and safe. We really couldn't decide which bar we should visit first. 

The bus connection is really good as well. There is no way you can get lost only be using the bus. All buses drive at least till 12 p.m. and a ride with a taxi is not too expensive in case you want to stay long in the city.
